Rechargeable energy storage system
ECE R136 is a safety standard developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe for rechargeable energy storage systems (REESS) for Class L vehicles (including electric bicycles, electric motorcycles, etc.). This standard ensures the safety of battery systems used in electric vehicles under various conditions, including vibration, temperature changes, drops, mechanical shock, fire resistance, external short-circuit protection, overcharge protection, over-discharge protection and over-temperature protection, etc.

The ECE R136 standard includes the following main test items:
1. Vibration test: simulate the vibration environment that the vehicle may encounter during driving to ensure the performance and safety of the battery system under these conditions.
2. Thermal shock cycle: Tests the battery system’s resistance to rapid temperature changes to ensure performance and safety under extreme temperature changes.
3. Drop test: simulate the situation of the battery system when it is accidentally dropped, and evaluate its structural integrity and safety.
4. Mechanical impact test: Evaluate the safety performance of the battery system when subjected to mechanical impact.
5. Fire resistance test: Verify the flame retardant ability of the battery system to ensure that passengers are provided with sufficient escape time in the event of a vehicle exterior burning.
6. External short-circuit protection test: Verify the protection function of the battery system under external short-circuit conditions to prevent further serious incidents.
7. Overcharge protection test: Ensure that the battery system has the function to prevent overcharge to avoid safety problems caused by overcharge.
8. Over-discharge protection test: Verify the protection function of the battery system when it is discharged to low power to prevent battery damage.
9. Over-temperature protection test: evaluates the battery system’s ability to prevent internal overheating when the cooling function fails.
Battery systems certified by ECE R136 can be sold in the European market and recognized by European countries. This is crucial for battery manufacturers and electric vehicle producers looking to enter the European market. The laboratories conducting these tests need to have the appropriate qualifications and equipment to ensure the accuracy and authoritativeness of the test results. Battery systems that pass ECE R136 certification will receive the E-mark, which is an important proof that they comply with European safety standards.
